  4.     Can former National Security Adviser John Poindexter
  5. accomplish what Oliver North could not: force Ronald Reagan or
  6. George Bush into a courtroom grilling about the Iran-contra
  7. scandal? Last week Poindexter's lawyer, Frederick Robinson,
  8. insisted that Reagan had ordered the admiral to tell Congress
  9. that the NSC staff was not violating restrictions on U.S. aid
  10. to the contras at a time when, in fact, it was. He also
  11. contended that Poindexter had briefed Bush about each White
  12. House meeting on Iran-contra that the then Vice President had
  13. missed. If so, Bush's knowledge might be far more extensive than
  14. he has admitted.

  16.     Federal Judge Gerhard Gesell killed North's subpoenas for
  17. Reagan and Bush, partly because North rarely met with either
  18. the President or the Vice President. But Poindexter saw Reagan
  19. almost daily, and he dealt regularly with Bush. The decision on
  20. who must testify in Poindexter's trial will be made by Federal
  21. Judge Harold Greene, who reminded Robinson that "so far,
  22. (Reagan) has not been required to appear at trial." Replied
  23. Poindexter's lawyer: "No, but we're looking forward to it, your
  24. honor."
